For the care of our cut flowers A J Guttridge recommends "The Flowers & Plants Association's" simple tips based on the latest extensive scientific research. Folowing these tips will help ensure that your flowers last longer and look lovelier.
Make sure vases are very clean
Use fresh lukewarm water with commercial cut flower food added.
Strip all leaves below the water level.
Take at least 3cm (1") off all stems, making a slanted cut with a sharp knife or very sharp scissors.
Avoid direct sunlight, heat, or draughts which can shorten flowers' lives.
Keep flowers away from fruit and remove faded flowers as they occur.
Top up the water regularly and add flower food in proportion.
Run out of flower Food?
If you have run out of the flower food that was supplied with your flowers, then you can substitute this with an aspirin tablet and regular sugar.
Bacteria that grows at the base of the stems plugs the conductive tissue and starves the flowers. Water with a more acidic pH slows the bacterial growth. Dissolve ½ aspirin tablet per ½ litre of water. Then to keep you flowers well feed dissolve ½ teaspoon of sugar into the ½ litre of water. Then use this water to fill your vase. When changing the water, Guttridges recommends that you cut away 1 inch from the bottom of the stems, thus giving you clean stem tissue for your clean water.
A Basic Guide for Plants
Keep your plants or planted arrangements out of drafts and any direct sunlight. And when it comes to water it's about finding the right balance - do regularly water but don't over water. Becuase of the pot or container they come, in we recommend you place them on a mat to protect your surfaces.
